GATHERING

GREETING *

Christ himself bore our sins in his body on the tree.

That we might die to sin and live to righteousness.

O Savior of the world, who by your cross and precious blood has redeemed us,

Save us and help us.

Let us pray.

Almighty God,

your Son Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross

so that he might draw the whole world to himself.

Grant that we, who glory in this death for our salvation,

may also glory in his call to take up our cross and follow him;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HYMN: “When I survey the Wondrous Cross” #298 UMH

Let us pray:

Holy God, who in Jesus Christ opened the gates of heaven to all who put their trust in him: in this time of trial, draw us to yourself and help us to know that the shape of love expressed itself by your outstretched arms on the cross, we pray trusting in the amazing grace made known to us in Jesus our Lord. Amen.

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 53:4-12

Hebrews 10:16 –25

Let us pray:

Gracious God, the comfort of all who sorrow, the strength of all who suffer: Let the cry of those in misery and need come to you, that they may find your mercy present with them in all their afflictions; and give us, we pray, the strength to serve them for the sake of him who suffered for us, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

SCRIPTURE

John 18:33-19:30

Matthew 27:51-61

SERMON “I fain would take my stand…”

HYMN: “Beneath the Cross of Jesus” #297 UMH

CONCERNS AND PRAYERS

Let us pray for the Church and for the World.

Grant, Almighty God,

that all who confess your name shall be united in your truth,

live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Silent Prayer

Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations,

In the ways of justice and peace;

That we may honor one another and serve the common good.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Silent Prayer

Give us all a reverence of the earth as your own creation,

that we may use its resources rightly

in the service of others and to your honor and glory

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Silent Prayer

Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours,

And grant that we may serve Christ in them,

And love one another as Christ loves us.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Silent Prayer

Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit;

Give them courage and hope in their troubles,

And bring them the joy of your salvation.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Silent Prayer

We commend to your mercy all who have died,

That your will for them may be fulfilled;

And we pray that we may share with all your saints

In your eternal kingdom.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Silent Prayer

We offer these prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

HYMN: “Blessed Assurance” #369 UMH

Let us pray,

Jesus, you enter into our suffering. You bear our cross. You know our grief. From within our wounds and weaknesses grant us your strength and courage. Give us patience and hope to endure. Let even the ragged edges of our anguish be blessed by the gentle touch of your love, that we too may be gentle in the face of evil, and steadfast in the face of fear, for the sake of your will. Amen.
