Worship Sundays at 10 am

Dear Saints,

Starting the first Sunday of October (10/6/24), I will be holding monthly Confirmation Classes for our youth, with the goal of confirming several of our young people on Easter (April 20, 2025). The classes will take place on the first Sunday of each month at 9:00 AM, before worship in the Library. Please note there will be no class in January.

We invite other baptized members of the congregation who wish to affirm their faith and deepen their understanding of following Jesus as members of Hamburg UMC. Our study will use the Belong series from United Methodist Discipleship Ministries, along with supplemental materials.

About the 'Belong' Series: The Belong series is designed to deepen our congregation's understanding of the sacraments—Baptism and Holy Communion—and to reinforce our commitment to the membership vows. It includes:

  • Foundations Guides: Tools for leaders, covering the meaning of Baptism and Holy Communion in the United Methodist tradition, and reflections on our membership vows.

  • Participant Guides: Engaging materials for members, featuring accessible language, dynamic visuals, and practical applications to help integrate sacramental practices into daily life.

These resources emphasize the communal nature of our sacraments, reinforcing our identity as a faith community and supporting discipleship growth.

For adults looking to make Hamburg UMC their home—whether coming from another congregation or new to the Christian faith—I will be offering a similar study using the Belong series in a condensed format, likely on Wednesdays in the library following the Grow dinner. This will involve three sessions with additional personal study time. If interested, please reach out to us!

If you or your teen would like to join, please contact the church office at office@hamburgumc.org so we can ensure we have enough materials.

I believe Hamburg UMC is a wonderful place to walk with Jesus, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

In Christ’s Service, with You, Pastor David Nicol

Grow Study Wednesday

evenings from 7:00PM to 8:00PM

Isaiah Study

The Isaiah Study is broken down into eleven 1-hour sessions. We start by gathering

either from the 6 PM dinner in the Fireplace Room or for those who cannot attend the

dinner directly show up for the 7 PM start in the Parlor 1st floor.

We start with a prayer and the scripture is presented on the monitor. We then read a

chapter; pause for reflection, discussion. We read “popcorn” style, which means

I do not have any pre-approved readers. If you are comfortable enough and the Holy

Spirit moves you, you can read. It appears to be working and I see no need to change

the style.

The group is large enough to allow one to melt into the walls and just listen to the Word

and others' thoughts and comments. (That is what I like to do) But yet, the group is

small enough that we can share our comments without judgment and have an open

dialogue. Generally, this is not a deep study. I like to look at it as a familiarization with

the book, flavored with some added comments by the people that make up the group

empowered by the power of the Holy Spirit.

So, whether you are a Bible Scholar or a roofer like me, you are welcome to this group.

This is an invitation to dive deeper into your relationship with “The Church.” This is like an entrance ramp to the road that will help strengthen you in your Biblical Knowledge and your faith as a Christian. We are not limited to Hamburg United Methodist; we have folk from Versailles and Four Corners UMC in attendance and a few people from

outside the Methodist Church that attend.

I hope you come and see the fun, the laughs, and the discoveries that are made at our

7 PM Wednesday Night Grow Study. So let this be your invitation to show up. See you

there.

Ring in the Joy: Join Our Handbell Choir!

Greetings to all Music Makers and Music Appreciators of the HUMC Congregation and community,

Have you ever wondered about the magical sound of handbells? The delicate chime, the rich harmony, and the sheer joy of making music together—these are just a few of the reasons why our Handbell Choir is such a cherished part of our church community. As we approach the new season, we invite you to join us in this wonderful musical ministry!

Why Handbells?

Handbells are more than just instruments; they are a means of expressing faith, joy, and community. Playing in our Handbell Choir offers:

  • Musical Fulfillment: Whether you’re a seasoned musician or a curious beginner, handbells provide an opportunity to engage with beautiful, intricate music. The experience of ringing and the satisfaction of creating music together is deeply rewarding.

  • Community Connection: Our Handbell Choir is a close-knit group that values fellowship and teamwork. We support each other both musically and personally, creating lasting friendships along the way.

  • No Experience Necessary: We will show you how to ring and how to find your notes on the page.    You will only get a couple of bells to start with and we will not ask you to do more than you are comfortable with.

What’s Involved?

Playing handbells involves ringing, but also a bit of technique and teamwork. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Rehearsals: We meet weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:00 in the bell room upstairs from October through May.  Our rehearsals are fun and engaging, focusing on learning new pieces and refining our skills.

  • Commitment: We work with everyone on their vacation and family schedules and have a few substitutes that are willing to step in when a bell player can’t be at a performance.

  • Skill Level: No prior experience with handbells is necessary! We welcome all levels, and we’ll provide the training and support you need to succeed.

  • Members:   Bell players need not be members of HUMC.   Bring your friends, neighbors and family members who are interested.   We are a no pressure group and would love to allow you to come and try without any expectation of seeing you every week.

How to Join?

Are you ready to ring in the new season with us? Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Contact Us: Reach out to Jeannine VanWey after any church service or at 716-680-3245 or vanwey@roadrunner.com for more information or to express your interest.

  2. Come to a Rehearsal: Feel free to drop by one of our rehearsals to observe and see if this is the right fit for you.
