About The Fill a Shoebox Mission

The shoeboxes stay within the United States, benefiting individuals in Southeastern Kentucky, ne of our nation's most isolated, rural, and distressed areas.. This region faces chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing, and rugged mountainous terrain, creating significant obstacles for residents.

Founded in 1921, Red Bird Mission was born as an answer to a prayer. Located in the southeastern corner of Kentucky, it provides education and Christian evangelism ministries to the area’s residents. Red Bird Mission is part of one of three United Methodist missionary conferences in the U.S. and is the most comprehensive mission effort of The United Methodist Church. Its outreach and services address the whole person—spiritual, physical, social, and economic.

United Methodists of Upper New York have participated in the shoebox mission for several years, contributing to five key program areas:

  • Education

  • Health

  • Housing Improvement

  • Outreach

  • Economic Opportunity

Completed Boxes Deadline: November 14, 2024

You may also consider donating new items from the request list, which can be dropped off at the church office on Sundays or during office hours. Your support will help provide much-needed resources and hope to this struggling community!

HOPE SONGS

In the opening concert of our 23rd season, Vocális presents music that shines with hopefulness and optimism. Through text and music, we reflect on the goodness of the world, and remind ourselves that joy and beauty surround us. Please join us!

OPENING PRAYER

Almighty God, we long to rest in your gentle arms.

We need your compassion as we face the challenges and disappointments of life.

When our hearts are hard, and our concern is only for ourselves,

turn us back to you.

Remind us of your saving love and keep us close to you, Lord.

Love us as only you can love, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Lord, we look for you in the wrong places.

We put our trust in material things.

We worry about things we cannot change.

We wonder if you are even there at all.

For all the times we have doubted you, Lord, forgive us.

For all the ways we have neglected your word

and ignored your people, forgive us.

Do not be far from us, Lord.

There is no one else we can turn to for help.

Renew our fickle hearts and help us put our trust in you.
