Let’s Lend a Hand: Support the Kenmore UMC HUB Flood Bucket Ministry

As part of the United Methodist connection, Hamburg United Methodist Church is proud to support the incredible work being done at the Kenmore UMC HUB, where disaster relief supplies are assembled and shipped to communities in need.

This past fall, Kenmore UMC sent out 448 flood buckets on 9 pallets to hurricane-impacted areas in the South. In January, klocal youth assembled 127 additional buckets, bringing the current inventory to 200 flood buckets ready to go when disaster strikes.

But the need continues — and another 100-bucket assembly day is planned for June. Supplies are running low, and this is where we can help.

Hamburg UMC May Supply Drive

Throughout the month of May, Hamburg UMC will be collecting donations to support this mission. Donation bins will be located in the Gathering Space.

A list of needed items is provided below, and most can be found at Dollar Tree, making it easy and affordable to give.

  • 1 16–34 oz bottle of dish soap

  • 1 4–8 oz pump bottle of air freshener

  • 1 6–14 oz insect repellent spray or lotion

  • 1 4–8 oz bottle of personal insect repellent (DEET-free preferred)

  • 2 kitchen gloves (durable, reusable)

  • 1 pair of work gloves (cotton with leather palms or all leather)

  • 5 scrubbing pads (no stainless steel or pads with soap)

  • 18 cleaning wipes (reusable or disposable)

  • 1 scouring pad

Family Promise Need - A Chance to Help

Some may remember and others may not know this, but Hamburg UMC for a number of years hosted families here in our church several times a year for a week at a time. We supported and assisted families by providing a place to stay and meals. These families were seeking to be rehoused through the local non-profit Family Promise of WNY, an emergency shelter for homeless families. A few years ago, Family Promise opened its own facility in Buffalo where they are now able to house the families. As a church, we still support Family Promise through Missions giving and United Women in Faith giving.

We thought perhaps our church members might appreciate the chance to contribute to this great ministry as well. LuAnne Firestone, Family Promise executive director, said that they are now low on "bed-in-a-bags" for twin and queen beds. Bed-in-a-bags are complete sets that include twin and fitted sheets, comforter and pillow cases.

Our Sarah Circle of United Women in Faith is scheduled to visit and tour the facility on Thursday, April 10 at 11:30 a.m. We would like to take with us any of these bed-in-a-bags that can be donated by Sunday, April 6. A bin labeled for this purpose will be in the coat room area of the Gathering Space.

Also, we invite any women of the church to attend the Family Promise visit as well.

See Rose Caldwell or Sue Gagne, Sarah Circle co-chairs, for more information and to join us.

The mission of Family Promise of WNY is:  Alongside our partners, we keep families experiencing homelessness together by offering emergency housing and compassionate support as they work to find their way back home.

Easter Flowers

Spring flowers displayed in our sanctuary on Easter truly add to the joyous feeling of the Resurrection! Once again, we can make this happen by purchasing a flower (or more) to be placed at the front of the church on Easter -- yours to take home after the service, of course.

Choose from:

  • tulips, hyacinths or daffodils at $11 each

  • white lilies and mums at $15 each

  • colored lilies at $16 each.

The flowers can be designated in memory of loved ones, in honor of loved ones or for blessings received.

They will be sold March 23, 30 and April 6 after the service. Deadline for ordering flowers is April 6. Cash or checks are accepted.

Please contact Rose Caldwell for further questions. Thank you!

Dear Saints,

As we continue in the Lenten season, preparing for Easter on April 20th, there is much going on in all of our congregations, and much planning for the celebrations of Holy Week. I do not know what you have committed to trying as a Lenten discipline this year, or how many of you have been reading through the Bible this year as I invited you to consider a couple of months ago. I hope, whatever spiritual disciplines you have adopted are feeding your soul and bringing you closer to Christ.

Easter brings celebration, not just because we see Jesus again after the crucifixion, but because it is a sign from God that death itself will be defeated. In the epistle lesson assigned for Easter Sunday, Paul tells the Corinthian church that if we have hope in Christ only for this life, we are people to be pitied more than any others (1 Corinthians 15:19). The resurrection of Jesus Christ means that this life is changed for us—we are to live in constant communion with God, led by the Holy Spirit, made new in Christ. However, there’s more to the story! Because Jesus is raised from the dead, EVERYONE will be! Christ will reign and death itself, the last enemy, will be destroyed. The restoration of all things is God’s plan, not just for a few of us, but for all creation (1 Corinthians 15:26).

God’s promise of newness begins in how we live our lives, and how we share them with each other, going so far as to reflect the future. I find that somewhat mind-bending, reflecting the future! What God intends is how we are to live now, anticipating God’s faithfulness will finish the work in God’s time. Because that hope is for all creation, whatever we do has eternal significance. We are called to love one another, lift up the fallen, care for those who are suffering, and offer hope to a hurting world. That, in short, is the ministry the Church of Jesus Christ is called to embody in the world. Sometimes we do that through our jobs, sometimes through our advocacy in our communities, sometimes in direct service to others.

In Hamburg, we have a series of ministries that help those in need of grace, care, and support. All that takes place at Sparks of Hope aims to support those struggling with addiction and their families and loved ones. Respite looks to care for those with memory loss and their caregivers. The sandwich ministry feeds hungry families whose housing instability has made their lives harder. At Four Corners grief support offers solace and strength to those who have lost loved ones and need space to process that loss. These ministries and others in our congregations and communities reflects God’s future where all things are made new, made possible by the resurrection of Jesus Christ who shows us the “first fruits” of that transformed world (1 Corinthians 15:20).

My hope for us this year is that we will find new ways to offer the resurrection hope that we celebrate at Easter with a world that sees too much suffering, death, disunity, strife, and destruction—especially in our communities, but also throughout the world. We are Easter people! As Lent draws to a close, will you prayerfully consider where God is leading your local congregation, and all of us as God’s people, so we might better share God’s grace with the world.

Serving Christ, With You,

Pastor David Nicol

Andrew, head of the Trustees, gave an update on our property at 52 Center Street.  The Trustees have been discussing whether to sell the property and look for another location to purchase or to renovate it.  Renovations may not be feasible due to cost, and tearing the building down and putting up a new structure is extremely costly.  In order to sell the property a Charge Conference must be convened.  After discussion it was decided that Rollin would investigate if using students from BOCES programs to renovate would be possible, and Andrew would contact a real estate appraiser to determine a price for a possible sale.   The Trustees will continue to explore options, and if selling is the best option a Charge Conference will be called.

Ron reported that money is needed from the endowment fund to balance the 2024 budget which has a deficit of approximately $19K.  Andrew said that Ron needs to contact Dave Vesneske to get a transfer of funds.

Pastor David made the motion to appoint Rollin Shoemaker to an interim one year term on Trustees.  Jerry seconded the motion.  Rollin will serve in a recently vacant Trustee position.

Matt reported that the interest of the endowment fund will be needed to balance the 2024 budget.   He is currently working on the 2025 budget .  The budget surplus from 2023 will be needed to balance this budget Finance is working on other ideas to help balance it also.

Rick reported that he is looking for enough leaders to run each area of fish fries so one person isn’t totally responsible for these areas.

Dave R. reported that he has asked Lynn Kieber to get a spreadsheet from Cristina showing the names, addresses and phone numbers of members so that a schedule of picture taking for the pictorial directory can be made.

Pastor David reported that he and Cristina will be working on getting our Sunday Facebook live steam working again .

Caroline reported that Missions and Outreach disbursed $36K in 2024.  This report is posted on our bulletin board and will be published in the newsletter.

Pastor David gave some background on the letter from the Council of Bishops that he read on Sunday.  Discussion was held about the letter.  Lynda Sentz requested that her response to this letter be included in these minutes.

Bishop Malone; My minister read your divisive, politically-charged letter to our congregation yesterday. I am appalled and feel ashamed to be a United Methodist.  In response to your letter: Urging mercy for people whose first act is to break the law of our land is foolish. Making no mention of the violent attacks, murders, rapes, and acts of pedophilia committed against Americans by illegal immigrants is shameful and divisive. Not only is it a disgusting position for the bishops' council to take, it is cruel to crime victims and their families. Where was the mercy for Laken Riley? No mercy was shown to Dominic Durden, Tessa Tranchant, Sarah Root,  Shayley Estes, Lennox Lake, Ronald de Silva, and the hundreds and hundreds of other homicide victims preyed upon by criminal illegal immigrants. Where are your prayers for their families?  No mercy was shown to those who have died and will die due to illegal drug trafficking. No mercy is given to children being trafficked into the sex slave industry day after day. Where are your prayers and concern for them? I do hope in light of your passionate letter, your council will fling open the doors of every United Methodist church building across America immediately and keep them open 24-7 to better care for the illegal immigrant population, criminals included. No more locked doors at your churches for any reason. Welcome them unconditionally; give them free run of all your spaces, and give your personal last dime to them. You first, Bishop Malone. Put YOUR money where your mouth is. Lead by example. When I began attending Hamburg UMC nearly 20 years ago, I didn't realize I needed to check the political views of the church first. I thought I was joining a church that would preach the gospel and seek to make followers of Jesus Christ in our world as well as offer opportunities to serve in ministry.  I am quite certain your radical views now being voiced from our pulpit will push many of the few people left in the pews right out the door. Good luck paying the bills. Let me assure you that not another dime of my pension will ever support your radical views and initiatives. I have no current plans to be your political operative. Sincerely, Lynda Sentz

Our next meeting will be February 24, 2025.

David R. closed with a prayer.

Respectfully submitted .

Church Council

         February 24, 2025

Present:  Pastor David, Rollin Shoemaker, Caroline Schneggenburger, Jerry Schneggenburger, Bob Cook, David Rood, Ron Lesandro, Rick Park, Cheryl Bell, Dan Paskie, Rose Caldwell

Pastor David opened the meeting with a prayer.

Rick made the motion to approve the minutes of January 27, 2025.  Rose seconded the motion.  Motion approved.

Ron provided information on the budget.  Ws have enough cash flow to pay our current bills.  We have reduced our ministry shares payment to 75% until we have a better idea how things are going financially.  Our 2025 budget is still projected to have $30K plus deficit.  Ron shared a draft copy of a letter worked on by the Finance Committee which will be sent out during Lent.  This letter explains why there is a deficit, it lists all the things that donated money pays for, it lists the committees people can join., and it asks for financial help to close this deficit  There will be a form that people can fill out and return should they wish to donate or join a committee.  Pastor David and Ron will personally sign each letter that is mailed out.  Discussion was held and some suggestions were made.  Consensus was that this is a good idea.

Rick reported that he has sent information on prefab homes that we could purchase for a parsonage to Pastor David and Andrew Kirst. They will fit on the current lot.  Pastor David said this option would give us what we need and the cost is close to what we currently have in cash.  Andrew will look at the information.  A joint Parsonage Committee and Trustees meeting will be called by Pastor David once all the information is in place.

Rollin reported that he has been in contact with BOCES to explore using students to renovate the building we purchased.  He is trying to get a meeting with the BOCES director to discuss this option further.

There is no new information on the pictorial directory.

Rick reported that he has been ordering supplies for the fish frys.  He’s still exploring prices for fish.  He expects our price will be in the $18-19 range.  He will have that information very soon so advertising can begin.

Rollin will have ad copy for the Hamburg Sun.  He suggested using Facebook boost to expand our advertising  to all of WNY.  Rick will take care  of the outdoor signage.  Rick will make an announcement on Sunday about the Fish Fry and need for desserts.  Rollin will send an email about desserts  and prepare an ad for Gusto in the Buffalo News. Rose will take care of the Facebook  advertising.  Jerry suggested mailing information to WBEN to have our fish fry included on the list read on Saturdays.

Pastor David continues to work on the Facebook live streaming issues.  He will try to hold the YouTube live stream on Sunday to see if that helps with Facebook.  He is also working on the replay syncing issue.

Rose reported that SPRC would like to recognize Jim Flynn’s service to the church as he is retiring.   She would like to take a collection for him.  She needs to have word get to the congregation-perhaps an email to everyone except the Flynns.

Rose reported that several people are helping with the Relentless Grace program being held on March 1st from 10-12 with a pizza lunch following.  There will be many meaningful activities taking place.  It is open to everyone.

Our next meeting will be March 24, 2025.

David Rood closed with a prayer.

Respectfully submitted,

Cheryl Bell
